Panchakarma (Shodhana Chikitsa)
Ayurvedic Detoxification Therapies
Panchakarma is a classical Ayurvedic cleansing and detoxification therapy designed to eliminate toxins and restore balance in the body’s three doshas — Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.
What is Panchakarma?
Panchakarma literally means “five therapeutic procedures.”
It is a specialized Ayurvedic treatment used to cleanse the body, improve metabolism, and restore natural balance.
The therapy removes accumulated toxins from the body’s channels (Srotas) and supports long-term health and wellness.
The Five Panchakarma Therapies
Vamana – Therapeutic emesis (cleansing through controlled vomiting)
Virechana – Therapeutic purgation for detoxification
Nasya – Administration of medicated oils through the nose
Vasti – Medicated enemas for balancing Vata disorders
Raktamoksha – Blood purification therapy (performed in selected cases)
The physician selects the appropriate therapy based on the patient’s constitution (Prakriti), dosha imbalance, age, and health condition.
Preparatory Therapies (Poorvakarma)
Before Panchakarma, the body is prepared through:
Snehana – Internal oleation using medicated ghee
Swedana – Therapeutic sweating treatments such as Abhyangam and Kizhi therapies
These treatments help loosen and mobilize toxins before the cleansing process.
Duration of Treatment
A typical Panchakarma program lasts about 21 days.
After the main therapy, patients are advised to follow specific diet and rest guidelines for optimal results.
